Catholic Bibles

The Holy Bible

I love my bibles, and there are several Catholic Bibles. Some of the scripture is written a little different depending on what Bible you are reading. One of my favorite scriptures is from John 1: 1-5. Below are versions of this scripture from all 5 of my Bibles. IM afraid I can’t say which is the better version, as I like how they all read. I’ve added some notes below each passage about what I like or dislike about these Bibles.

    New American Bible version

    Douay Rheims 1852 Version:

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
    and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him
was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not
    overcome it..

In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him: and
without him was made nothing that was
    made.
In him was life, and the life was the
    light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

For me, This is a very good bible in the large print edition. Good notes and references and Catholic basic information. My second fav.

Tons of notes and reference. However all of the Psalms are in Roman Numerals, and I am not that good at deciphering the RN above 100<G> My fourth fav.

    The Jerusalem Bible Version:

    The RSV - Catholic Edition

In the beginning was the word:
    the Word was with God
    and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things came to be,
not one thing had its being but through him.
All that came to be had life in him
and that life was the light of men,
a light that shines in the dark,
a light that darkness could not overpower.

In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was
    God. He was in the beginning with God;
all things were made through him, and
without him was not anything made that
was made. In him was life, and the life was
the light of men. The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness has not
    overcome it.

Fantastic notes and references in this bible. My third fav.

This is my large print Family heirloom edition. Great pictures, notes, references with dictionary and concordances. Has the Rosary, information about the Vatican with pictures. My first fav.

    Ignatius Bible Version:

    My Extended Notes:

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God. He was in the beginning with
    God; all things were
made through him, and without him
was not anything made that was made.
In him was life, and the life was the
light of men. The light shines in the darkness,
    and the darkness has not
    overcome it.

My first favorite bible would be the 1892 Douy Rheims, but it is huge, and an antique, and I don’t want to damage it any further by reading from it. I am keeping it safe, and refer to it only when necessary. This and the Jerusalem Bible were given to my by my Mother. I cherish these bibles. The RSV Catholic Edition Family Bible is very beautiful to hand down to your kids. The NAB large print version, and this RSV Catholic edition, are my two favorite to sit and read.

This is the paperback with the Blue cover. Very hard to read in my opinion. There are no notes to speak of, and everything seems shoved together.

Below is a very good video to watch about the bible, and it dispels some of the myths about Catholic History. Enjoy!
